Person Specification

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Qualified or part-qualified (3 year +) accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA) or QBE (Qualified by Experience) with a strong track record in charity finance.
  • In-depth knowledge of Charity SORP and tax compliance (Gift Aid, VAT).
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Xero) and advanced Excel skills.

Skills & Abilities

  • Hands-on Approach: Willingness to handle both high-level reporting and transactional bookkeeping.
  • Communication: Ability to explain financial information to non-finance staff and trustees.
  • Accuracy: Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • Proactive: Ability to improve financial processes and systems.

Desirable

  • Experience in grant reporting to major funders (e.g., Big Lottery, Trusts).
  • Background and/or interest in Education and/or Sport preferably football

Key responsibilities

1. Financial Accounting & Compliance

  • Maintain the nominal, purchase, and sales ledgers using Xero, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, deferred and accrued income.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Charities SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) and FRS 102.
  • Manage Restricted and Unrestricted fund accounting, ensuring compliance with donor agreements.
  • Liaising with Charity auditors during the year end process in preparation of audited accounts

2. Management Reporting & Budgeting

· Development of the key performance indicators (KPI’s) to show if finances are within or outside of agreed budget tolerances

  • Work alongside budget holders to develop the annual budget and re-forecasts.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and commentary for the Senior Leadership Team and Trustees.
  • Monitor cash flow to ensure liquidity, managing treasury activities and bank reconciliations.

3. Operational Finance

  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with HMRC regulations To be undertaken from April 2027
  • Making payments to suppliers, staff, and control of aged receivable days.
  • Manage income processing (donations, grants, and fundraising income), ensuring restricted funds are ringfenced.
  • Review and improve internal financial controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.
