RMF & PFA Empowering Young Footballers

In the world of professional football, the road to success isn't always smooth. Pitfalls and challenges are part and parcel of the bumpy journey. One former professional footballer who experienced and overcame plenty of those on the way to enjoying a successful career in the game spanning 14 years is Charlie Oatway.

Now, as part of his role with The Russell Martin Foundation, Charlie has teamed up with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) to share his experiences with young players.

From talking to Under-23 teams at Southampton FC and the club he supported growing up, Queens Park Rangers, Charlie is helping young players manage the ups and downs of being a footballer. He's characteristically honest about his own setbacks, including a difficult period that led to him being in prison and his own personal challenges including being dyslexic.

Despite these challanges, he made it as a professional footballer, showing that perseverance pays off. In his insightful and inspirational talks, Charlie covers the key subject areas of education, mental health, relationships, finances and social and life choices whilst stressing the need for young players to be prepared for the unpredictability of their careers.

Drawing on his own experiences as a player and a coach, Charlie advises on how to handle injuries, deal with agents, and balancing personal life with football. He also highlights the need for players to have a backup plan, including the importance of getting an education in case football careers doesn't work out.

Dealing with dyslexia himself, Charlie wants to help young players face their own challenges. His talks aim to give them the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed, both on and off the pitch.

In an industry where careers can be short, Charlie's message is clear; with the right mindset and preparation, young players can make their mark in football and help prepare themselves for life after and potentially outside the game.
