RUSSELL MARTIN XI TRIUMPH ON SPECIAL DAY AT ST. MARY’S
A crowd of over 7,000 saw a Russell Martin XI triumph on penalties against a Saints Legends team at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Sunday in a special fundraiser for The Russell Martin Foundation, Saints Foundation and Hampshire based charity, Sophie’s Appeal.
Russell Martin’s team, captained by his former Norwich City teammate Grant Holt took an early lead through an own goal by former Portugal international Jose Fonte. An entertaining contest which saw Theo Walcott on the scoresheet finished all square at 4-4 after Saints legend Matt Le Tissier netted a trademark injury time penalty.
A penalty shoot-out followed which saw the Saints boss step up to put his team ahead.
Jo Tessem and Morgan Schneiderlin scored for the Saints Legends but misses from James Beattie and Walcott gave Elliot Ward to chance to hand Martin’s side a 4-2 win on penalties and take the spoils in a thrilling encounter.
With thousands of pounds raised for each charity through match ticket sales, a special auction of shirts worn by players on the day and a competition giving two lucky winners the chance to play in the game, the day proved a huge success both on and off the pitch.
Southampton Manager and RMF Founder, Russell Martin, said:
“It was great to see so many former teammates and Saints legends come together to support three very special charities on what was a special occasion. I want to say a big thank you for everyone who took part and the fans who turned up in such big numbers. I’m sure they will have enjoyed the game and the chance to welcome back so many great Saints legends.”
Greg Baker, CEO, Saints Foundation, said:
“Thank you to all players on both teams who gave up their time to play in this charity match, as well as the 7,000 + fans who turned out on the day and gave such fantastic support throughout. It was a great occasion for the club, to see our legends back on St Mary’s turf supporting us in raising funds for our club charity Saints Foundation, as well as Russell Martin Foundation and Sophie’s Appeal.”
RMF staff were among the thousands in the stands and supported staff from both Saints Foundation and the football club on the day.
Alan Sanders, CEO Russell Martin Foundation, added:
“We are hugely grateful to both the Saints Foundation and Southampton Football Club for putting on such a brilliant and memorable event and supporting Russell’s foundation. The money raised will make a huge difference to supporting the charity’s work across Sussex.”
